Color theory in character creation

Colors are a valuable tool and knowing how to use color theory is an ace up your sleeve in character creation.

Colors can help convey emotions, attention, or a character's personality visually. It is quite common to see the use of primary colors in the construction of iconic characters such as Mario and Sonic.

In our daily lives, we come into contact with various colors, some of which have specific functions such as a traffic light on the street. The cinema also makes extensive use of colors, such as the movie Kill Bill, which uses three main colors: black, yellow, and red, each with their own meanings and also together.

Black: is associated with death, power, and mystery. Yellow: represents betrayal, power, and revenge. Red: is a vibrant color directly associated with fights in the movie.

Black+yellow+red: together they form the triple discord and there is a lot of discord in the movie.

Some characters like Sonic have a blue body, symbolizing a determined character ready for adventure, with the addition of the vibrant and energetic color red on his feet to represent Sonic's speed.

  • Primary colors: Red, yellow, and blue are vibrant and energetic colors that can help convey a sense of strength and determination. A character who predominantly uses these colors can be seen as bold, brave, and fearless.

  • Secondary colors: Green, purple, and orange can help create a sense of balance and harmony. A character who uses these colors can be seen as calm and balanced, but also as someone willing to take risks and venture into new situations.

  • Warm and cool tones: Warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow can help create a sense of warmth and energy. A character who uses these colors can be seen as extroverted and energetic. On the other hand, cool colors such as blue, green, and purple can help create a sense of calm and tranquility. A character who uses these colors can be seen as introverted and thoughtful.

  • Contrast: Contrast between colors can be used to create a sense of drama and tension. A character with a contrasting color scheme such as black and white can be seen as mysterious and intense.

  • Complementary colors: Complementary colors, those that are on opposite sides of the color wheel, can be used to create a sense of balance and harmony. A character who uses a combination of complementary colors such as blue and orange can be seen as well balanced and confident.

The theory of colors is something that is definitely worth studying. In the construction of a simple game, for example, you can use only one or two colors in a character and convey emotions and character traits, just like Sonic, who has mainly two colors - blue and red - that interact with each other and give maturity to the character.
