What is Character Design?

Character Design is an artistic field that is related to the creation of characters, not only for games, but also for film, books, advertising, and comics.

Character design is a complex process that involves various elements that will visually influence the character's story, personality, style, and purpose. A good example of this is Spawn, a character with a dark personality and style, seeking revenge, which perfectly fits with his backstory and the story's style.

As with any concept, there must be a study. Character Design involves a careful study of the character's posture, colors, backstory, and how these elements relate visually to the character.

By using references, it is possible to create a base for the character's posture, clothing, and accessories. The most important thing is composition.

Creation process

During the study, some of the things that can physically influence the character are their personality and backstory. These two aspects, for example, greatly influence the character's posture. Superman's posture, for instance, highlights his authority and power, in addition to his blue and red colors, with blue conveying a sense of security and red as a vibrant color that emphasizes the character's powers.

Style:

It is possible to use a personal style or incorporate an existing style, depending on the project and the desired final result. Usually, the art director works closely with the artist to determine the style that will be used throughout the project.

The character's style is determined by the Character Design, as it must have the same style as the environment it will be inserted into, whether it's an animation, a game, or an advertisement.

Professional development:

Create a lot. Only through creating many designs will improvement take effect. It's important to emphasize the study of basic elements, such as color theory, volume, light and shadow, posture, and creating a personal style.

Details:

Details such as features and expressions make the character deeper, and the level of detail must be concise with the style. For example, a caricature may not be realistic, but it emphasizes certain features of a face. The character's composition must also be considered because it is a concept, a work that has a study behind it that will visually influence the character.
