What is Concept Art?

It is a form of art where the artist communicates a design idea for a game, product, film, animations, and others.

Creating a concept goes beyond just creating something; there is a study to develop the concept. For example, a character in their story might be a metalhead, non-communicative, and also a geek. They can be visually represented in various ways, but the concept takes into account the study of what will be created. So the character can be represented wearing punk rock clothes, glasses, with a slightly hunched back posture, and crossed arms to represent that they are a closed-off person. There are several mechanisms that can and should be used in the concept.

Of course, you cannot judge a person by appearance. It is clear that they are much more than they appear to be, but it is not wrong to say that their story molds them, and concept art takes this into consideration.

Not only does the story influence, but also the universe that will be inserted, the purpose, and the style of the game or film. The concept takes into account everything around to create the design. So in creating some concepts of a city, for example, one must perceive where it is inserted, the style of architecture, and there are several elements to be perceived and highlighted in the design.

Concept art in games is used to create the visual of characters, scenarios, vehicles, and objects and establish the overall style of the game. It is an important stage in creating a game, allowing artists to develop initial ideas for characters and their designs, movements, and clothing.

However, concept art is not exclusive to games. Many other creative areas also use concept art, such as:

  • Movies: concept artists can create designs for costumes, scenarios, and creatures for animated or live-action films.

  • Animation: concept artists can help develop characters and environments for animations.

  • TV programs: concept art can be used to establish the visual of characters and scenarios for TV programs.

  • Comics: concept artists can help create designs for characters and scenarios in comics.

  • Advertising: concept art can be used to create designs for advertising campaigns or promotional materials.

Concept art is also very important as a model for the other arts that will follow in the project.
