What is MMORPG?

MMORPG stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

It is a genre that can accommodate thousands of people simultaneously within a digital world. Essentially, multiple players will play online and generate interactions between themselves, as well as between the players and the world.

There is a sense of freedom within MMORPGs because there are various possibilities for content where players can choose to interact with it on their own terms.

In terms of content for players, MMORPGs undoubtedly have the most, which generates countless hours of gameplay.

With the large interaction between players, this certainly helps to maintain the audience and make it especially enjoyable. It's like living in the game, with character progression through levels and equipment that generate a sense of achievement resulting from the player's effort. Additionally, the player can choose their own path for a mission or take a break from battles and adventures to progress in a profession or manage a guild.

The content is more diverse than in other genres.

Within an MMORPG, you will find, in addition to the progression system, a vast array of different monsters, places to explore, dungeons, various equipment, resource collection, different classes, player-influenced economies, professions, player combat, guilds, and even alliances. All of this makes MMORPGs a game with a very rich digital world where there are various adventurers (players) engaging in different activities and interacting with each other.

It is worth noting that

An MMORPG requires very good administration, as it is a game that can be considered infinite and requires constant expansions, updates, balancing, and new content.

Many games in this genre have failed to keep the game active. It is essential to pay attention to all elements, as it is the most difficult genre to create and maintain. Several companies have failed in some important points, resulting in fewer players online in their game. A good example of this is the exodus that occurred in World of Warcraft to Final Fantasy XIV.

There are differences within MMORPGs from game to game, such as mechanics, camera view, art style, progression, combat system, and atmosphere.

Within MMORPGs, there are some individualities related to mechanics that differentiate some games, making the player's experience unique within the genre. For example, Dofus is a tactical game with turn-based mechanics, Lost Ark has an isometric view and an action-based mechanic similar to some MOBA games, and Black Desert Online has a third-person camera view and action-based mechanics. These individualities within these games have their own audience, as they are different games with different experiences. Therefore, the audience within MMORPGs is very large and varied. This is a crucial point for a studio that is creating a game within this genre; determining its audience and keeping them loyal is crucial.

Games in this genre are usually produced by large studios due to their complexity. However, there are some smaller studios that create games on a smaller scale, such as Mad World, and some medium-sized studios like Intrepid Studios, which is currently developing Ashes of Creation, a very interesting MMORPG where the creators' interaction with the audience is a market differentiator and seems to be a promising game.
