What is RPG?

Role-playing game is a genre of game where the player will play a character and after assuming their character, they will embark on an adventure in a narrative.

The mediation of the adventure will be done by the game master who is another player whose role is to mediate and master the narrative in the story for the players who are playing the characters.

The main elements within RPG are interpretation, rules, and narrative.

Main points to play RPG:

Rules: Within the genre, various options of rules can be found, which are systems to assist in gameplay, not leaving everything to the imagination. Some of the systems are well-known, such as D&D, but nothing prevents players from adapting or creating a new system.

Narrative: Some of the narratives, just like the rules, already have some on the market, present in books like Tormenta, but it can also be created. Within the narrative, there will be a world and scenarios where the adventure will take place, so a good narrative will make the game deeper and more immersive for the players.

Player: The players will create a character sheet with attributes and characteristics, in addition to the character's race and class. This sheet will present all the character's stats such as hit points and actions as well. With the roll of the dice, the player will achieve their successes and failures during their gameplay.

Game Master: The game master will mediate the narrative, describing to the players the scenarios, enemies, everything that is happening, and managing the actions of monsters and enemies with dice rolls that the players cannot see the game master's dice rolls.

The rolling of the dice will dictate the success and failure of various actions of the players, such as attacks, strength or intellect tests, and the rolling of the dice makes the game very dynamic, but with a certain element of luck involved.

RPG Board Game: This is the traditional RPG that uses dice, boards, and character sheets. It is much more imaginative and has more freedom for the players, where actions and the story are not predetermined. Examples include The Witcher and Dungeons & Dragons.

Digital RPG: Unlike traditional RPGs, these are games in digital media, with a fixed story, but they maintain many RPG elements. MMORPG, for example, is a branch of RPG but leaves the player more free within the game universe and has contact with other players online. Examples include Final Fantasy, Baldur's Gate, Chrono Trigger, and World of Warcraft.
